Who We Are

In existence for 13 years, The Dismas / Magdalene Project, Inc., is a Christian lay organization that consists of 3000+ incarcerated Texas men and women who have made a serious and significant response to a changed life of good citizenship and holiness.  The Dismas / Magdalene Project, Inc. founded by Deacon Robert R. Leicht, Jr., is operating in 17 units of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The goal of the Project is to significantly reduce the recidivism rate of Catholic offenders.  The results of our prison work have been recognized by TDCJ Chaplaincy Department as part of its Life Changes Academy.

Our History

Since 2001, this total Catholic Outreach of The Brotherhood/Sisterhood operates as a non-profit, 501(c)3 tax-exempt corporation entitled: The Dismas / Magdalene Project, Inc.   As of 2015, Texas has eighteen (18) men’s chapters and four (4) women’s chapters, total membership of 4700.  Three women’s chapters are free-world award winning Charities in Texas, recognized by our Texas Governor in 2009: in Houston, Corpus Christi, and Victoria, TX. One men’s BSD Chapter is parish based in San Antonio.  All fraternal and sorority chapters are manual driven by 50-60 Catholic volunteers. Retreats and start up for prison facilities are at no cost for Texans, thanks to the Scanlon Foundation.
